MPP PROMOTES POWER TO THE BULLIED
Ability Online Offers Bully-Bouncing Tools to Kids
Toronto, Ontario– Today Christine Elliott, MPP for Whitby–Oshawa and Deputy Leader, Official Opposition in Ontario, made a statement in the provincial legislature, recognizing that this Saturday, December 3, is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. She added: “This lends itself as a fitting time to highlight the fantastic work Ability Online has been doing for 20 years now, to congratulate them on their successes and the differences they make in people’s lives every day.”
Ability Online, a registered charity, provides a free and secure monitored online support community linking children, youths and young adults with disabilities or long-term illness to other kids and adults who care, such as medical professionals and teachers. The website offers monitored topical discussion threads, chat facilities, and games and activities, as well as help with homework. Links to health information, peer support, and opportunities for skill development for kids, as well as supports for parents and other caregivers, are just a mouse-click away.
The International Day for Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by the United Nations as a way to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. A key goal is empowering people living with a disability or long-term illness.
Ms. Elliott drew MPPs attention to one particular Ability Online module in light of recently announced anti-bullying legislation. Ability Online’s Bully Bouncer module can help kids with disabilities, who may be vulnerable and feel particularly isolated, to respond effectively to bullying tactics. Concluded Ms. Elliott, “Ability Online is practical and fun, and helps kids with disabilities be just kids.”
